winter fly fishing on san juan river

Winter 2011 Fly Fishing Newsletter
Greetings from Southwest Colorado!

2010 was a big year for us here at AVA. In many ways our biggest yet. From a guide standpoint it was our 10th season on the water and for many of us guides it marked well over 14 years of guiding. Wow, to think, as a group we have over 200+ years of combined guide experience. On top of that we are still a relatively young group of angling guides! We also would like to thank all of you who helped make the last decade so much fun. There have been so many great fishing and guide moments over the years. I have said it before, and for what ever reason, our guide service attracts the best guests. We are looking forward to seeing you all during the 2011 campaign.

The biggest news we have to share is that the AVA guide families continue to grow. Just this past year we had 5 new babies bless the AVA guide house holds. Aaron Hyder and his wife Erin had a baby girl last summer, Matt and Nicole had Henry in October, Ben Rae and his wife had their second little one in early December, Will and Amanda welcomed Benjamin into the world on December 15th and Chris and Serra had their little girl Payton a few days later. All the babies are doing well and some have already gone fishing. We like to start them young around here. So, if your guide is little groggy on a guide morning, it might have more to do with a baby than beers from the night before.

As for the rivers and streams, we are in good shape for the season with plenty of snow in the mountains. Mountain snow pack is above average and that will help keep the rivers and streams flowing strong and the trout healthy.

We will once again be offering great winter and spring rates on many of our guide trips. Plus our August special for kids. Just one way for us to say "thanks" for all the support over the years. We are also going to keep our rates the same for the 2011 season. We have not bumped our rates since 2008.

Feel free to click around our web site along with the AVA blog; enjoy the new photos (more on the way) and news snippets. As always feel free to drop us a line to say hello.

Cheers,
Will, Chris, Ralph, Tim, Marc, Josh J, Josh C, Rick, Matt, Chip, Drew, Amanda, Ben, Jon, Nate, Aaron and the dogs

Winter Fly Fishing Reports
The Animas has been fishing pretty well this winter. We have had a mix of water conditions; one day ice and slush the next clear and perfect. On a couple warm days there was even a little low-elevation snow melt making for murky waters. However, the feisty trout of the Animas continue to enjoy nymphs fished deep in pockets and pools. Streamers stripped slowly have also produced some nice fish. Midge hatches have been steady and should continue through the next month or so. BWOs should show in mid March.

The San Juan is fishing well with small junk patterns and micro midges. The lake turned-over at the end of December and visibility remains marginal. A foot or two is about as good as it gets, but the fish continue feed. Other than that, same old same old. Small eggs in the morning with small chocolate midges trailed behind. Red annelids and midges are top producers in the afternoon if BWOs are not happening. Leeches can also be king. Tan, gray and natural have been working pretty well in the slow water. Here are a few reports from the past couple months.
